For years the US newspaper industry has been struggling with large-scale redundancies and newspapers filing for bankruptcy on a weekly basis, largely due to the popularity of us getting our news online. 72 year old billionaire publisher Mort Zuckerman, owner of The (New York) Daily Times has come up with an interesting suggestion claiming that bingo online could save the newspaper industry.

With more and more of us cancelling our printed newspaper subscriptions and opting to read our news online the US newspaper industry has come under enormous strain and is near to breaking. The problem is that the revenue generated by online advertising, which pays for the online editions of newspapers, often falls short of the cost of producing such sites. Media mogul Zuckerman has suggested that bingo online could be the saviour of our newspaper industry, sites such as USA Bingo could work alongside the newspapers.

The technically minded 72 year old has suggested that newspapers should be allowed to sponsor online bingo games on their websites like many newspapers do in the UK stating that ‘bingo online could save the newspapers’. For years in the UK national newspapers have had a close affiliation with bingo, with free bingo cards given away in their editions and bingo balls which were printed to give the results. Since then, UK newspapers have moved into the bingo online world with the biggest earner being The Sun who generate over $15 million each year to subsidise their printed and online news.

Due to the infamous Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 US financial institutions are restricted from processing gambling related transactions making it much more difficult for US citizens to play bingo online. Congressman Barney Frank has introduced a bill that would effectively regulate and tax all internet gambling and deal with such issues as underage gambling and gambling addiction possibly paving the way for Mort Zuckerman’s suggestion.
